Beescapes

What is ecologically-responsible beekeeping?

We did what many folks dream of doing...gave up city conveniences for country living. We envisioned bird-watching, vegetable-growing, wood-working and star-gazing. But never bee-keeping! Not us. No way. Couldn’t tell a bee from a wasp. Wasn’t even sure what honey was made of.

The first thing we did was what any good doctor and nurse would do for an ailing, over-grazed piece of north Texas prairie land. We healed it of course! As the balance and resilience of nature was restored, so returned wildlife. When we took up hobby beekeeping a few years later, we discovered our marvelous honeybees thrived on the same flowers, shrubs, trees and vines that were attractive to our own eyes and beneficial to native pollinators and wildlife.

This “Buds and the Bees” website is our way of sharing what we learn from horticulturists who guide us, beekeepers who mentor us and our honeybees who always have the last word. Ecologically-responsible beekeeping can produce rewards even sweeter than honey! We hope you find our website buzz worthy and join us again soon.

Our mission is to promote the many benefits of ecologically-responsible beekeeping. We try to be good stewards of the land by conserving and restoring a balance of native plants that nurture honeybees, native pollinators and wildlife. Because honeybees may fly up to 6 miles from their hives to collect nectar and pollen, everybody is a potential “host” of honeybees.

What did the bee say to the flower? “Hey, bud, when do you open?”
